Middle School Students Pursue Areas of Interest through Enrichment Program
The enrichment program at Shaler Area Middle School offers opportunities for students to explore content beyond the normal classroom curriculum.  Students engage in learning experiences, dialogue with guest speakers, watch and discuss curated sets of lectures, construct projects, experiment with labs, and compete in academic competitions. Mr. Reagle, facilitator for the program shares, “They do this not for grades, but to develop wisdom.”

Students who see tasks through to completion earn Enrichment Experience Points which get tracked during their two years at SAMS. Tasks are categorized by topic. If a student earns enough XP in a single category, they are issued a SAMS Degree in that content. This year 16 Enrichment Degrees were given at the end-of-year award ceremonies.

The first ever seventh grader to earn a degree is Colby Mine in the category of Mathematics.

Eight eighth graders worked over the last two years to earn a combined 15 SAMS Enrichment Degrees.
