SAHS senior named Commended Student in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program

Shaler Area School District is proud to announce senior Candace Kozej was named a Commended Student in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Shaler Area High School Superintendent Dr. Sean Aiken, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Bryan O’Black, and School Counselor Chuck Rhoads presented Candace Kozej with a letter of commendation from Shaler Area High School and National Merit Scholarship Corporation for her achievement.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2023 competition by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

This year, Candace is taking AP calculus BC, AP biology, and AP physics as part of her course load and is a. member of the Shaler Area High School volleyball and lacrosse teams. Outside of school, she also works at Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream. Candace plans to continue her academic career and pursue a degree in biomedical sciences at Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Duke, or UNC. 
“I am really happy and shocked,” Candace said of receiving the letter of commendation. “This makes me feel more confident going into the college application process.”
