Tickets Now on Sale for The Shaler Area High School Presentation of Anastasia
Shaler Area High School presents Anastasia March 1, 2, 3, 8, and 9.

From Tony winners Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, creators of such Broadway classics as Ragtime and Once on This Island, this dazzling show transports its audience from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the glitz of Paris in the 1920s as Anya, a brave amnesiac, sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by ruthless but smitten Soviet officer Gleb, who is determined to either woo or silence her, Anya enlists the aid of dashing con man Dmitry and lovable ex-aristocrat Vlad. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family.

This show is a high-production hit sure to please the whole family. Seamlessly weaving together true stories from history with myth and a good old-fashioned princess fairytale, there is something to delight audience members of every age and interest! Director Jennifer Birch shares, “Our show this year is led by three outstanding senior performers who embody all the best parts of the Anastasia story: perseverance, love, friendship, and a commitment to making the world a better place. I couldn’t be prouder of them or more excited to bring this show—with all its glitz, glam, and (of course!) sparkly ball gowns—to the Shaler Area stage.”

The production reflects the rich talent of our community. From costumes by Mrs. Kristen Paul to vocals from Music Director and Shaler Area grad, Emily Yuretich, Shaler Area has come together to create a vibrant production. Ms. Birch explains, “Casey Bruchwalski’s choreography is innovative and propulsive and our dancers are awe-inspiring. We have an amazing community parent, Jeanne Marshall, who is guiding our set and who is also arranging some excellent, professional-level lighting rentals for our booth kids to help design and run. Mr. Scott Albert, from SAES, is taking the helm at the pit this year and leading the kids through the gorgeous Russian- and Parisian-inspired score. We also have been incredibly blessed this year to have another Shaler grad, Mr. Dan Bittner, a professional actor on a break from the Broadway National Tour of Les Misérables, coach and advise our cast.”

Senior Max Milligan plays Anastasia’s nemesis, Gleb. He first fell in love with theater as an elementary student when he watched his older sister perform in the SAHS performance of Once on This Island. Milligan is passionate about the stage and is pursing a degree in musical theater. He notes that art and music bring us together. He shares, “Theater is about connecting with people. If I make the audience feel something, it means I did my job. But it’s also connecting with my friends behind the stage. I’ve met lifelong friends here. The bond with people you perform with is what keeps you here.”?

Ms. Birch reflects, “The SAHS performing arts students are magic. They are talented, intelligent, dedicated, and kind. They are the strength, heart, and future of this community. They are everything we want our kids to be as we send them out into the world. And to have them bring a fairytale to life this year feels so appropriate. This show is about holding tight to your roots while you seek new adventures; about loving and honoring your first-family even as you grow and build a found-family; about finding courage in the midst of fear; about opening your eyes to new ways of viewing the world; about balancing legacies with opportunities. It’s the embodiment of what our seniors are living and experiencing in real time, and the passion they bring to these characters and to embarking on the next stage of their lives is awe-inspiring. The technical trappings of the show are certainly a good fit with the talents of our cast. But the heart of this show echoes so beautifully the hearts of our students. I believe that resonance will help them spread their unique Shaler Area student magic to the audiences we are so excited to welcome to the auditorium next month.”
